Recently published in Pulp and Paper Asia by Amanda Marcus, this article focuses on the key role that integrated forest biorefineries can play in moving industry away from fossil fuels and toward affordable and renewable energy sources to meet their own power needs, while also creating new revenue streams from the production of biofuels and biochemicals. The benefits of a phased-in approach are discussed, as is TRI’s highly-customizable gasification process and TRI’s success over the last several years gasifying black liquor at a leading Canadian containerboard manufacturer. Published in Inside Washington Publishers in January 2007 by David Clarke, this article discusses the increasing attention being paid by industry leaders and the trade press to the concept of pulp and paper mills converting a range of biomass to synthesis gas, via gasification, for a wide variety of green power and clean fuels applications. TRI’s technology is cited specifically, as is a new subcommittee on biomass gasification at a leading professional society, chaired by TRI President Dan Burciaga.
